Martin Connolly

Martin Connolly is an Irish writer and professor. He was born in Liverpool, but his family moved back to N Ireland when he was five years old. He grew up in Belfast, part of the story of which is told in his novel Belfast, with Dinosaurs, 1979 (published by Shanway Press). In 1991, he moved to Japan and has lived there ever since. As a professor at Tsurumi University, Yokohama, Martin has published various peer-reviewed articles on both medieval English literature (which he studied at Trinity College, Dublin and Queen’s University, Belfast) and on James Joyce.

Since 2015, he has also published works of creative writing - a novella, books of poetry, novels and short stories, mostly through Snowchild Press.

His works have received considerable critical praise in the press and from eminent writers. He started writing poetry in his late teens. Martin has been teaching Creative Writing at Keio University in Tokyo for over ten years.

Martin also has a great interest in music. He runs a jazz website entitled Jim’s Garage, which carries numerous reports of concerts and meetings with famous players. Martin has also put out two CDs of guitar music under the artist name of ‘Machrijam’. Most recently, he published a book of original photos of jazz legends, taken when he accompanied his brother Jim to various jazz festivals and gigs. It is called Kind of Green -Jazz Legends, from '86 - '90, through an Irish lens and features over 150 never-before-seen photos of various jazz stars; it also recounts the story of the Irish jazz magazine JazzNews International.

His book of narrative poems is to be published by Brimstone Press in June 2024.
